Desmonde resigned from Reform UK a day after deputy group leader's defection

Category: scandal

Cllr Susanne Desmonde, who represents Pool and Tehidy on Cornwall Council, resigned from Reform UK in April 2026 to sit as an Independent Non-Aligned councillor. Her departure came one day after the group's deputy leader Cllr Roger Tarrant announced he was leaving to become Cornwall Council's first Restore Britain-aligned member. The back-to-back resignations of the deputy leader and a serving councillor accelerated the disintegration of Reform's Cornwall group, which had already lost five members in October 2025 over reported interference from the national party. Reform's Cornwall group has now lost roughly a quarter of the 28 councillors elected in May 2025, contributing to the fragmentation that has left Cornwall Council with 11 separate political groups.
