Christopher Harborne questioned over legality of £36m Reform UK donation

Category: financial conduct concern

Christopher Harborne donated £36m to Reform UK. Reporters say records suggest he may have registered as a domestic voter only in June, which could mean he was treated as an overseas voter and therefore subject to a £100,000 annual cap on donations under the Representation of the People Act. Reform has not disclosed the donors' registration dates. The legal status of the donation hinges on whether his voter registration met the domestic residency criteria. Reform said it was confident the donations were legal, and Nigel Farage said they were compliant under current law. If the elections bill is applied retrospectively and the donation is ruled impermissible, the money would have to be returned. Laura Lock, deputy chief executive of the Association of Electoral Administrators, said providing false information to register to vote is a police matter that can lead to an unlimited fine or up to 51 weeks' imprisonment.
