Councillor apologises after comments described as 'blatant racism'

Category: racism

Councillor Mark Howard apologised after comments he made during a Gloucestershire County Council meeting were described by fellow councillors as "ridiculous" and "blatant racism". The remarks, made during a debate on the use of hotels to accommodate asylum seekers, included a comment referencing Muslim women "walking three paces behind their husbands", which Howard addressed in a written apology and said "was not meant to cause offence" and "drew on unhelpful stereotypes". Conservative councillor Sajid Patel objected at the time and Conservative Group Leader Stephen Davies lodged a standards complaint and appealed to Reform UK central office. It was reported that Reform took no further action and that the complaint to Gloucestershire County Council was not progressed.
