Mohamed Amersi sued the BBC over allegations of involvement in corrupt payments

Category: corruption

Mohamed Amersi was alleged by the BBC to have been involved in corrupt payments linked to his work for Telia, and he has launched a defamation claim against the broadcaster, saying Panorama and an accompanying article falsely suggested he knew or should have known about corrupt payments; he seeks damages, aggravated damages and an injunction to prevent further publication. Amersi told the court the publicity cost him a knighthood and a peerage and said he was debanked by a Swiss bank, and he denies any knowledge or involvement in the payments the BBC reported. The BBC is defending its reporting on the grounds of truth and public interest and disputes that Amersi suffered serious reputational harm, pointing to Telia’s deferred-prosecution agreement with the US Department of Justice which recorded improper payments to a Gibraltar company called Takilant and described links to Gulnara Karimova. The BBC said no corroborating documentary evidence for Amersi’s assertions has been disclosed; Amersi’s barrister Oliver Powell read a witness statement to the court and the dispute remains subject to the pending trial.
