O'Brien suggested benefit claimants needed "putting down"

Category: offensive

Francesca O'Brien, a Reform UK candidate, was reported to have suggested that people on benefits needed "putting down", using language associated with the killing of animals to describe welfare claimants. The remark treated the recipients of state support as sub-human and was published in a public setting rather than a private exchange. The comment was surfaced in HOPE not hate's 30 April 2026 report "60 Reasons (and Counting) to Not Vote Reform on May 7th". Reform UK retained her as a candidate for the 7 May 2026 elections despite the party's public claim that its vetting was "the best in the country".
