HOPE not hate reported in April 2026 that Linda McFarlane, Reform UK candidate for the Chopwell and Rowlands Gill ward on Gateshead Council, had made a series of violent and racist social media posts. These included calls for Keir Starmer and David Lammy to be shot, remarks that asylum seekers should be drowned, and posts advocating a return to a "white Britain". Chronicle Live and The Northern Echo followed up on 24 April 2026, with Reform UK saying it was "thoroughly looking into" the concerns raised about her Facebook activity ahead of the 7 May 2026 local elections.
