Michelle Fascione apologises for closure of South Tyneside nurseries

Category: public expense question

Michelle Fascione, cabinet member for children and families, education and skills, apologised to families and staff for her part in a Reform UK cabinet decision to stop the council running ten daycare nurseries known as the Stanley's centres in South Tyneside. She told residents she had tried various options to make the service viable, including seeking private investment, but that the cabinet voted to end council operation of the Stanley's service. Fascione said the decision reflected assessments of the service’s financial sustainability and insisted it was not a reflection on staff, praising their work and saying the council would support affected children, families and staff through a transition. The council said the closure proposals followed a service review and staff consultation; the council’s education and skills scrutiny committee had recommended delaying the decision but the Reform UK cabinet pressed ahead amid public protest and criticism.

Fascione said the video showed a view that differed from her own.
