Steven Rutherford, Reform UK opposition lead at Newcastle City Council, said he received death threats and racist abuse after supporting the council's refugee settlement scheme. He reported the abuse followed his public support for the city's plan to settle refugees, and said the threats included racist language and calls for violence. Rutherford condemned the abuse and said the racism recalled attitudes he had hoped were left behind since the 1980s. He criticised what he described as a lack of moderation by social media companies, and remains the Reform UK opposition lead on Newcastle City Council.
