Daniel Astley expelled from Reform UK after anti-Muslim social media posts

Category: racism

Daniel Astley, a Reform UK councillor for Benwell, Scotswood and Denton Burn in Newcastle, was expelled from Reform UK after archived social media material in his name included anti-Muslim statements and comments about immigration on the city’s West Road. Archived content from a deleted X account attributed to him included messages urging an independent MP to leave the country, claims that Muslims commit sexual violence and terrorism, and calls for the mass emigration of non-Europeans. Reform UK’s Newcastle group leader, Steven Rutherford, said the party removed Astley because of his prior membership of the Homeland Party, which Rutherford said is proscribed under Reform UK rules. Astley issued an apology saying he wanted to retract previous social media comments and that he supported freedom of religion; he is now listed as an independent councillor on Newcastle City Council’s website.
