Christine Duffy withdraws resignation after sending letter to wrong council

Christine Duffy, a Reform UK councillor for the Town ward on Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, submitted a resignation letter that was delivered to Kidsgrove Town Council rather than to the borough council's proper officer. In the letter she said she had received very little or no training for the role. She later said she no longer intended to quit and would continue to serve the residents who elected her. Electoral Commission rules state a councillor cannot withdraw a resignation once it has been received by the relevant authority, but Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council chief executive Gordon Mole said the resignation had not taken effect because he had been notified that the councillor had withdrawn the letter before it reached him. Duffy said she was appalled that the letter had been made public and alleged political rivals had used it to try to force a by-election. Mole said he was seeking an explanation for how the letter was shared, and Kidsgrove mayor Mike Stubbs called for the matter to be investigated.
