Hayley Coles paused library displays, including Pride displays, in Staffordshire
Category: discrimination
Location: Staffordshire
Staffordshire County Council confirmed that its cabinet member for culture, Hayley Coles, had decided to review discretionary library display space. The council said displays not promoting the core library offer or wider council services had been paused or removed, including Pride displays. Byline Times reported on 21 August 2026 that library staff had also been instructed not to celebrate Pride and to remove Pride-related events and communications. The TUC criticised the restrictions as political interference and launched a petition calling for libraries to remain inclusive. Coles said the review would include community impact assessments. Both she and the council stressed that no books or materials had been removed from library stock and that LGBTQ+ titles remained available to borrow. The reported restrictions concern displays and promotion, not a confirmed ban on borrowing books.
