Reform MS suspended after use of racial slur, denies being racist

Category: racism

Laura Anne Jones, a Reform MS for South East Wales, was suspended from the Senedd for two weeks in December 2025 after the standards commissioner found she had broken the code of conduct following her use of a racial slur about Chinese people in a WhatsApp chat in August 2023. Jones denied that she is racist, saying she was "genuinely sorry" for using the word, that it "was a term used for a takeaway" during her youth, and that she has since undertaken language training. Her pay was docked and she was not permitted to take part in Senedd proceedings during the suspension. The standards commissioner cleared her of making fraudulent expenses claims. Members of the Chinese community said the term had caused "a lot of hurt" and a community group described the language as carrying "deeply hurtful and racist connotations" and being "deeply disappointing to hear such language from an elected representative".
