George Madgwick accused ITV of election interference

Category: factual inaccuracy

George Madgwick accused ITV of election interference, alleging two undercover journalists posed as campaigners and helped canvass for Reform UK candidates in Portsmouth. He said he had allowed the men into his home, described the contact as an invasion of privacy and said he might identify them after receiving legal advice. The claim matters because Madgwick supplied no evidence that the journalists deliberately disrupted campaigning or affected results, while ITV said the programme was produced in compliance with the Ofcom Broadcasting Code, relevant laws, and in the public interest. ITV’s investigation separately recorded racist and extremist statements connected to Reform figures, a context that does not establish Madgwick’s allegation that the broadcaster’s reporters altered election outcomes.

George Madgwick urges withdrawal of RNLI support after migrant rescues

Category: xenophobia

George Madgwick (leader of Reform UK Hampshire) used Facebook to call on the public to withdraw support and funding from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution after an RNLI lifeboat station near Portsmouth temporarily closed following anti-migrant protests. He said he was annoyed that the RNLI had facilitated the arrival of more than 100 migrants in Portsmouth and urged people to lobby against the charity, while warning that he did not endorse threats of physical abuse. Southampton Itchen MP Darren Paffey described Madgwick's comments as incomprehensible and said Madgwick was not fit to lace the boots of an RNLI volunteer. Mr Paffey's post attracted strong public backing, with more than 1,000 comments reported, and Madgwick said he would personally withhold donations to the RNLI until it withdrew from the policy he criticised.
