Councillor faces sexism complaint over comments at women's event

Category: sexism

It was reported that Peter York, vice chairman of West Northamptonshire Council and a Reform UK councillor, allegedly said "some women should have never left the kitchen" during a conversation at Northampton Guildhall at an International Women’s Day event. The Northants Women’s Empowerment Group described the alleged comments as "a series of deeply offensive and sexist remarks" and submitted a formal complaint requesting a standards investigation into whether York breached the council’s code of conduct. York said he was "provoked" and that his comments were "taken entirely out of context", but apologised "for any offence taken". The council described the remark as "wholly unacceptable", and Reform council leader Mark Arnull said an investigation had taken place and he was "satisfied that this was a result of political point scoring", adding that York agreed the comment was unacceptable and "will not be repeated". No public record of a final standards decision or sanction was provided in the material reviewed as of 15 March 2026.
